Retinol and Vitamin C: How to Use Them Together

Retinol and Vitamin C: How to Use Them Together

Everyone wants healthy, glowing skin.

Nothing makes that more clear than the fact that the anti-aging skincare industry rakes in around $60 billion worldwide every year.

We know that eating healthy, drinking water, and staying out of the sun are all great ways to ensure our skin ages gracefully. But we can always use a little extra help from a skincare product.

Two skincare superstars are vitamin C and retinol.

Here’s how to use retinol and vitamin C together as anti-aging secret weapons!

Basics of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is more than a trend. Searches for this beauty ingredient climbed over 3,000% on Pinterest in the last few years.

Here’s all that vitamin C can do for your skin:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Boost collagen production for more youthfulness
  • Heal scars and blemishes
  • Make skin tone appear more even

Vitamin C is perfect for those who need to repair past skin damage and start fresh.

Basics of Retinol

Retinol is a powerful anti-aging ingredient.

Here’s all that retinol has to offer:

  • Smooths out skin
  • Reduces appearances of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce pigmentation from scarring or blemishes
  • Promote collagen production

If your skin is sensitive, don’t use full-strength retinol. Add it in slowly and expect a little irritation but not too much.

How Do Retinol and Vitamin C Complement Each Other?

Your skin is naturally acidic.

Vitamin C is acidic in nature, and retinol thrives in an acidic environment.

Vitamin C actually stabilizes retinol, which can help make both ingredients more effective.

Both of these products can be irritating to the skin when you first start to use them. Keep reading to learn how to do it right.

How to Use Retinol and Vitamin C Together

How can you put together these skincare heroes?

Carefully and with high-quality ingredient products.

Use a light moisturizer that lets in heavy ingredients. Gel or water-based is best.

Apply one product, and then take a moment before applying the next one. This allows the product to penetrate.

While retinol and vitamin C are both sun-sensitive, you don’t have to put them on only at night. Layer an effective sunscreen over your combination products.

When using the products before bed, add the retinol product last. It will still be effective without causing as much irritation.

Other Ways to Combine Retinol and Vitamin C

Don’t stop at just creams, serums, and lotions.

Make sure you get both vitamin C and vitamin A (where retinol comes from) in your food.

Citrus fruits are famous for their high vitamin C content. Broccoli, kale, and cauliflower also are rich in vitamin C.

Vitamin A can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, melons, spinach.

Meat, poultry, gelatin, and bone broth boost collagen production.

A healthy diet, exercise, and high-quality skincare products will help you look younger and feel better overall. Treat yourself right and make sure you’re comfortable and happy in your skin.

I have purchased the vitamin C+ serum a few times and this most recent purchase is completely different. The ingredients don’t even match the old bottle. When was the change made and why can’t I find anything about it on your website? What was my favorite yellow, light serum is now almost lotion-thick and white.
