From celebrities to media outlets, we’re bombarded with skincare routines and given the challenge to find the best skincare products.
Taking care of our skin is so important because our skin is our primary defense against the environment, so we must keep it strong and healthy.
But where can you find the best skincare products? How do you know what you need or don’t need?
Keep reading to learn what you need to know to have the best skin of your life.
Determine Your Skin Type
Before you can hunt for the best skincare products, you must find out what your skin needs.
Splash your face six times with lukewarm water and if your skin feels tight, you have dry skin. If not, wait 30 minutes and press a facial tissue against your skin.
If the tissue reveals oily spots, you have oily skin. But if you see greasy areas on your T-zone only, you have combination skin. Now, you know what to look for.
Dry Skin
Your goal is to hydrate from inside out! Begin by drinking more liquids and eat food with high water content. For example, cucumbers, tomatoes, and broccoli contain 90% water or more.
Regarding topical care, find products that contain retinol to stimulate dormant skin cells. Don’t go overboard as it will make your skin dependent on superficial sources of water.
Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, you must cleanse with a face wash that has salicylic acid and then rinse off with cool water. Ensure your moisturizer and serum are oil-free and cut down on the cosmetics as too many can create excess oil.
Combination Skin
As the name suggests, this means your skin is made from two or more different skin types. You must use the right skincare products to restore balance even if you have to swap certain ones out occasionally.
For example, if you have a combination of oily and dry skin, use a gel-based cleanser or mild, lightly foaming cleanser. And if you have drier skin, use a mild, creamy lotion cleanser.
Focus On Your Top Skincare Need
It’s easy to get carried away with skincare systems to achieve glowing skin quicker. Instead of choosing a product that claims to cleanse and moisturize, stick to one. This is because the product may not be as effective and you could end up with irritated skin.
Read the Ingredient Lists
Ensure that your skincare product has an SPF of 15 or more if you’re heading outside. Look for avobenzone and zinc oxide as they are effective sunscreen ingredients and will prevent potential skin damage.
Find Products with Active Ingredients
For those after anti-aging products, active ingredients are your best friend. Some anti-aging active ingredients include peptides, kojic acid, retinoids, hydroquinone, and salicylic acid. For example, this anti-aging serum contains retinol to help smooth out any wrinkles.
Other inactive or active ingredients can help with anti-aging but those listed have scientific research to back them up.
Which Skincare Products Will You Choose?
Only once you know your skin type and the ingredients necessary to improve your skin can you find relevant skincare products to add to your routine.
There’s a wealth of moisturizers and serums on the market to ensure your skin is protected and still retains its healthy glow. Happy shopping!
